Mrs Simmons and Mrs Micklethwaite teach Class 1 and are supported by Mrs Barry and Miss Newton.
In Class One we provide an exciting, ‘hands on’ and child led approach to learning. We aim to ensure that every pupil’s thirst for learning will be nurtured and encouraged through the many and varied learning experiences offered to them throughout the school day.
We value and encourage creativity and provide stimulating and challenging activities for all. In Class One, we use the DfE’s Letters and Sounds principles and practice of high quality phonics. In Maths, pupils are given opportunities to apply and consolidate Mathematical skills and calculations in engaging and thought provoking activities.
In Class One we use a themed approach to learning which changes termly. Last year’s exciting topics were ‘Wareside’, ‘Superheroes’ and ‘Seaside’. The Foundation Subjects are taught within these themes in the afternoon where the children from Reception Class join us too. To ensure continuity and progression, the Year One and Two topics are the same each year, and are on a two-year rolling programme.
Class One pupils have access to a large covered outside area, which is used by the pupils to explore and extend their learning. This area changes regularly to fit in with the topic we are exploring.
Oxford Owl is an excellent website that offers support for parents with learning phonics, reading and maths. It is incredibly important that families at home model the correct pronounciation of the 44 phonic sounds. Click on the link below to listen to the sounds with helpful examples. The link will also lead you to other helpful sections, such as ‘How to blend sounds to read words’.
